Project Acorn Tree Requests

Project Acorn Fact Sheet -- information on Jamestown, the tree's environmental benefits, planting tips, watering tips, and a quiz.

Water trees weekly thru Christmas and then start up again when you see buds appear in Spring.  Here are some planting tips.

About the Cherrybark Oak

These Jamestown Cherrybark Oaks are intended for planting primarily on private residential properties or school yards. Before you request a tree, make sure you have a suitable location with:

  • Moderate to moist soil (not dry areas or areas that cannot be watered by hose, downspout, or rain barrel).
  • Room for it to grow. They eventually grow to over 60-100 feet tall with crowns over 60 feets wide and trunks 3 feet wide, so you want to avoid planting these under overhead power lines or too close to your home.

They do well with any type of sunlight, but do best in full sun with fertile soil. Trees are in one-gallon containers and are approximately 30 inches tall. For more information on cherrybark oaks (also known as quercus pagoda or quercus falcata var. pagodaefolia), visit http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/trees/quefala.pdf.

Cherrybark Oaks provide cover and nesting sites for birds and mammals. The acorns are an important food source for wildlife including blue jay, woodpeckers, nuthatch, grackle, waterfowl, wild turkey, raccoon, white-tailed deer, and squirrels. The heaviest eaters are the gray squirrel, wild turkey, and blue jay. Acorns of the red oak group are an especially important food source in the winter because those of the white oak group germinate soon after falling and, therefore, are unavailable.
